Nonpartisan Policy
The League of Women Voters of the United States is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but always working on vital issues of concern to members and the public.
That decision was made in 1920 and continues today to ensure that the League’s voice is heard above the tumult of party politics.
Nonpartisanship toward candidates and political parties is critical to the effectiveness of the League's unique voter service/citizen information work. It also provides a strong foundation for the work done in support of issues. Action on legislation and ballot proposals is more effective when the public and the legislators understand that the League's conclusions are based on merit rather than politics.
